Swiss National Park

This is the biggest natural preserve in the country, and the largest protected area in Switzerland, occupying the area of 174.2 km. Located in the Canton of Graubünden at the east of Switzerland, near Zernez, this is the only National park in Switzerland. The park has numerous species of both plants and animals that live in the perfect natural environment. In order to preserve the environment, there are certain rules. Visitors are not allowed to light a fire, leave trails, stray off the road, or disturb the animals and plants. With some luck and patience, one can find animals such as stags, chamois, marmots, ibex, red deer, mountain hares and other wildlife. A rich alpine plant life can be seen in all its beauty, with over 650 different species. The park comprises of alpine meadows, lush forests and high mountain landscapes. There are many different paths for hikers. The park is all about nature conservation – hunting animals and cutting down trees is prohibited, and the entire area is left to its own natural development. The only place hikers or visitors can sleep in is the Chamanna Cluozza. This lovely log cabin is 1882 meters above sea level.

Appenzel

Appenzel a.k.a Appenzeller land is a small village in northeast Switzerland. This paradise with lush valleys, rugged mountains, thriving villages and flowery meadows is a delightful place for hikers. This village is one of the famous spots for yodeling, alphorn playing and other Swiss traditional activities. The village has a rich culture dominated by music, painting and cheese making. Appenzel is a great place to visit during both summer and winter. It is an ideal place for activities such as hiking, jogging, mountain biking, visiting museums and other sites in the village. Appenzel is well known for its local food, with a wide variety of traditional cakes, pastries, chocolates, cheese, fresh vegetables and fruits.

The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe. Located near Schaffhausen and Zürich, magnificent Rhine flows into the falls. The falls are 150 meters wide, with a height of 23 meters.

Berner Oberland

Berner Oberland is famous for its history, as well as its scenic vistas. This region lies at the north of the Pennine Alps. This small town is situated between the Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and near Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch mountains. If you are looking for fresh mountain air, untouched nature and some peace and quiet, Berner Oberland is the place to visit. Romantic shores of the lake Thun, jagged peaks, deep forests and beautiful mountains make Berner Oberland an unforgettable experience. This is another place for hikers to have some adventure, with numerous trails.

Berner Oberland can be easily reached via train, cable car or bus, as it is located near Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. The Lauterbrunnen valley is stunning. This small town near Interlaken is known for its beautiful waterfalls.
