Alpine Wonders

Mt. Pilatus

Also known as the “Mountain with Swiss Cheese Fondue”, Mt. Pilatus was named after a Pontius Pilate who was buried there, according to the local legend. Mt. Pilatus, close to 7000 feet high, is one of the mountains near Lucerne. There are several ways to get to the top: you can use a cable car, bus or train. The view is stunning, but it is quite cold in winter. The cogwheel railway will take you on a trip up the mountain. You can go back using the cogwheel railway, or you can return via the ropeway/aerial gondolas to Kriens and then have a short bus journey to Lucerne. The steep cogwheel railway and central Switzerland’s biggest suspension rope park guarantee an extraordinary excursion. You can get great tourist packages, some of which include overnight stays at the mountain.

Schilthorn and Piz Gloria

This is Switzerland’s famous 2970-meter high summit in the Alps. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the summit. The longest aerial cableway in the Alps offers incredible panoramic views. Cable cars need to be taken from the valley to the summit. The cable car passes over Grauseeli, a small lake, giving you a great opportunity to take pictures. Experienced hikers can even climb up the peak. It takes about 5 hours to reach Schilthorn from the valley. The view stretches from the well known Eiger, Mönch, Titlis and Jungfrau to as far as the Mont Blanc, Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest.

Do not forget to visit the Piz Gloria. Lined on two revolving solar-powered platforms, the restaurant is in a constant motion, allowing its guests to enjoy a breathtaking view. The Piz Gloria is famous because it is the world’s first revolving restaurant. Many scenes from the 1969 James Bond 007 movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” were filmed at Piz Gloria. The restaurant is also famous for its Bond breakfast – don’t forget to take a sip of the legendary “Martini, shaken not stirred” right here at the James Bond bar.

Mt. Rigi

Mt. Rigi known as the “Queen of the Swiss Alps” is well known for its recreational activities. Located 1800 meters above sea level, the summit offers you almost 120km of green land for hiking or leisure walking. You can see almost the entire Swiss Mittelland from this place. It offers many winter excursions and activities like skiing, winter – hiking or sledding. Mt. Rigi is a traffic-free recreation resort and you will enjoy peaceful and quiet environment. You can take the cogwheel railway from the Arth-Goldau railway station, near Lucrene, and enjoy the scenic beauty of Lake Lauerz and Lake Zug, or you can take a steamboat ride.

The Vitznau is a small village on the shore of Lake Luvrene, near the foot of Mt. Rigi, and it is the base station for Europe’s oldest rack railway that runs all the way up to the Rigi-Kulm. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Vitznau Fortress and the museum.

Aletsch Glacier

This is the largest glacier in the Alps, covering 45 square miles (120 sq km), and has recently become a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Aletsch Glacier is one of the many glaciers located between the Canton of Berne and Canton of Valais; what makes this glacier a unique phenomenon is the fact that it is very old, enormous and constantly on the move. The two dark stripes on the glacier’s surface look unreal.

If you are looking for more attractions, you have to see the ‘Ice Palace’ carved into the Aletsch Glacier. There are many tours and hikes to the Aletsch glacier from Brig, via cableways. The Massa stream goes from the glacier, though the Canyon, continues down towards Brig, and meets the River Rhône. The Aletsch glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area.
